San Diego Airport Moment of Silence

At 8:46 a.m. the San Diego International Airport paused for a moment of silence to honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

To recognize and remember those who lost their lives in the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, employees at San Diego International Airport (SAN), Flagship employees and other tenants joined the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in a “Moment of Silence,” at 8:46 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2021. During the “Moment of Silence,” all TSA passenger screening activity at the Security Checkpoints and work by SAN employees and tenants was suspended as a public announcement was made throughout the terminals. SAN was among many airports across the country that participated in TSA’s nationwide remembrance “Moment of Silence.”

Thank you TSA and Terminal Operations for capturing the “Moment of Silence” at SAN.

SAN Employees Participate in International 9/11 Commemoration Video

Mark Chewiwie at TSA Checkpoint

Mark Chewiwie was interviewed in front of the TSA checkpoint in Terminal 2 for the ACI-NA 9/11 commemorative video.

September 11, 2021, marked the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks that significantly impacted the airport industry. To commemorate this milestone on aviation security, SAN and airports across the country joined Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) in a 9/11 Anniversary Video project.

ACI-NA provided the video concept in August and each airport quickly worked to select two staff members, one who worked at the airport during September 11, 2001, and one who had recently joined the airport industry.

SAN’s Marketing team, led by Jon Graves, coordinated Mark Chewiwie, Airside Operations Duty Manager II, and Kim McLean, Manager, Customer Experience Design. Mark worked at SAN during 9/11 and was willing to share his experience. Kim joined SAN in 2020 to lead SAN’s customer experience initiatives. Both Mark and Kim were filmed in the terminals reading a prepared script adapted with their personal experiences.

SAN’s video was combined with other airports’ videos and edited in a single montage of airport industry voices sharing a unified message. On September 11, 2021, SAN posted the video on its social media channels. Click here to watch the video.
